Jacob Trouba Signs 2-year $6M deal with the Jets
Today RFA Jacob Trouba and the Winnipeg Jets agreed to a 2-year $6M deal. Trouba had requested a trade at the start of the season, due to “lack of opportunity” in Winnipeg, but the Jets were hopeful they could get him signed. If the Jets failed to get him under contract by Dec. 2, then Trouba would have been forced to sit out for the entire season.
The 2-year bridge deal could mean one of many things for the Jets and Trouba. If the Jets keep Trouba for the entirety of the deal, then the hope would be that he continues to develop into a Top-4 blue liner that can play on Winnipeg’s second pairing behind Dustin Byfuglien. In this situation is easy to see Trouba wanting to stay in Winnipeg, but for a hefty raise.
However, Trouba’s new contract could also mean that he is on the move. His new contract has a low cap hit which could entice teams that are close to the salary cap, but need help on the blue line. Teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, both come to mind.
As for now, Touba’s in Winnipeg, and on a team friendly deal, which has to be a win for Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets.
