The Day Big 12 Football Died

After months of waiting, fans and potential Big 12 members were told today that the conference will not expand. In July, the Big 12 began exploring potential expansion candidates. Air Force, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado State, UConn, Houston, Rice, SMU, South Florida and Tulane were the group of schools in consideration. At the time it was said 2 or even possibly 4 new members could be added. It would have given the Big 12 the conference championship game it desperately need. It would have also given the opportunity to 2-4 programs to compete in a power 5 conference. It felt like it would be an easy choice. The conference would benefit, the new additions to the Big 12 would benefit, and the fans would benefit. Overall, college football would benefit.

But the good ol' boys of the Big 12 couldn't come to an agreement today. Their penis envy blew the idea up and they decided to not expand. Also, the president of FOX Sports didn't like the idea because of a clause that would distribute additional revenue to members if expansion happened.

So what's left a is a group of 10. Most whom will never be given the benefit of the doubt during playoff selection. Simply put, if you aren't Texas or Oklahoma, you will struggle from this decision. No one else in the Big 12 offers the same brand. And maybe that's how the suits in Austin and Norman wanted it all along. That's just me speculating. But there is simply nothing attractive about that conference anymore. And when they had a chance to write a new script they failed. And now they may as well write an obituary for the Big 12.
