Mariners Daily 3/5
Today the Mariners had split squad action and unfortunately they lost both games. To begin the day the Mariners lost to the Dodgers 7-3 in a pretty sloppy defensive game. Later the M's finished up the day with a loss to the Athletics 4-3 with Felix Hernandez making his last start before the WBC.
Andrew Moore started the game against the Dodgers and pitched very well, going 2 innings allowing just 1 hit and striking out 1. Edwin Diaz followed Moore and also pitched well, going 1 inning allowing no hits and striking out 1. The rest of the Mariners pitchers after Diaz pitched pretty well but were plagued by defensive errors and out of the 7 runs the Dodgers scored only 2 were earned runs.
Offensively the M's struggled to get much going against the Dodger's pitching. All 3 of the Mariners runs came on Kyle Waldrop's 3-run homerun and the rest of the Mariners lineup could only muster up a total of 5 hits. One of the guys who were able to get a hit was Danny Valencia, which is good to see because he will be platooning with Vogelbach at first and hasn't shown much offensively so far this spring.
Defensively it was a very ugly game. 3 different Mariners committed errors that cost the Mariners 5 runs. There were also multiple wild pitches/passed balls that cost the M's and some poor decisions that impacted the game. I was watching the game and some of these errors were routine plays and if they did not have happened the M's most likely would have won this game 3-2.

I didn't list Zach Shank because he was 1-2 but also had a costly error.
In the second game of the day Felix Hernandez started and struggled in the 1st inning, allowing 2 runs, but bounced back and finished with 5 strike outs. Felix had more velocity on his fastball compared to last year and had the curveball and change-up working. Hopefully Felix has a bounce back season this year and even though he gave up 2 runs today the 5 strike outs are a very big step in the right direction. Chase De Jong made his Mariners debut in today's game, pitching 2.0 innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, only 1 was earned, 1 walk and struck out 1.
Offensively the M's had some pretty good contribution from some key players. Heredia, Seager, Vogelbach, Peterson, Ruiz and Powell all did very well today. However the problem offensively was hitting with RISP, The M's were only 2-12 in today's game and had 10 LOB.
Defensively it wasn't the greatest game either, however it wasn't as sloppy or costly as the on against the Dodgers. Hernandez and Freeman both had errors today, but only Freeman's resulted in a run being allowed to score.
