Houston's Rebuild Got At Least 1 "F"

Carlos Gomez just got designated for assignment this week.  Wow.  You look at where this guy was a year ago, heck, even going into the season this year, he was a potential All-Star.  After the Strasburg signing, Gomez would have been the most sought after free agent in the 2016-17 offseason (arguably with Yoenis Cespedes), and yet now here he is looking at free agency two months early.

Gomez's downfall started after the trade to Houston, where his numbers dropped a considerable amount, but not enough to warrant concern.  It was a change of scenery, something he had to get used to.  This season, he has been hitting the ball approximately as well as Alex Rodriguez, who is being released on Friday by mutual agreement by him and the Yankees.  In other words, Gomez is not good this season.  If not for Mike Fiers, Houston would have completely, COMPLETELY lost the trade with the Brewers.

The Brewers acquired two current top 100 prospects in OF Brett Phillips and SP Josh Hader, along with a borderline major leaguer in OF Domingo Santana and another minor leaguer in Adrian Houser, for Gomez and Fiers.  With Houston designating Gomez for assignment, a straight up Fiers for Phillips and Hader is flat-out highway robbery, not even including Santana and Houser.  Being a Brewers fan, I'm glad the baseball Gods are smiling at me for not allowing the Zack Wheeler/Wilmer Flores for Gomez trade to go through.  If I'm Houston, I wish it did.

Too bad for Gomez, he is a hard working player, and is too talented to not find a job somewhere to help a contender this season.  If I'm the New York Mets, I'm looking at him right now, with the Cespedes injury, a bad year from Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto, and Jay Bruce not catching on quite yet.
