What Makes You So Special?
Eight teams have never won a World Series, many more only have one championship, and the Cubs have two. And the fan base is ignorant enough to expect sympathy from us just because none of them were alive to see it happen back in 1907 and 1908. Eight teams, however, have never won before 1907 or after 1908. Eight. Here they are:
Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres
Yeah, none of these teams have the national tradition that the media has been forcing down our throats since the beginning of the drought, and none of these teams have been around for 100 years. But honestly, CURSES DON'T EXIST, and I refuse to feel bad for a fan base that is honestly the same as the Yankee fan base, except they act more humble because they lose instead of win. Baseball history is not the same without the Cubs, I get that, and a lot of good things and story lines have happened at Wrigley Field. I just don't feel sorry for them, Chicago has the Bulls, the Blackhawks and to a lesser extent the Bears (and White Sox for those Cub fans who just like Chicago teams, period).
Chicago is a city that seems to just hang on too long and/or make people feel sorry for you. For instance, every time I discuss with a Bear fan about football, you always hear about the 1985 Bears and they will make it sound like they just won that championship ring. If you talk to them about baseball, they will complain about the Cubs not winning for a century. With basketball, it is always Michael Jordan this, or Derrick-Rose-broke-his-leg-again-and-that's-why-we-can't-win-this-season that. The only time Chicago fans live in the present is when they feel sorry for themselves.
Don't get me wrong, the Cubs winning would be historic to a degree, and even if they don't win this season they will still have a few chances at least down the road to win with the young roster and more than enough financial flexibility. I just don't want them to, not before my Brewers add a pennant. You think your team is bad, Chicago? How about a team that only has four postseason appearances total in 47 years? What about a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 15 years? Or a team that comes so close to winning the World Series twice, but loses in devastating fashion? Or how about two teams that have not even been in the World Series? All I'm trying to say to Cubs' fans is this: Please stop acting like you are the only franchise to have gone through extended misery, you're not, and you're far from it. Throughout the years, you have had more hope of winning than most of these teams over time, and these markets haven't had the overall success that the city of Chicago has in the sporting world. In other words, it's not always just about you, Chicago.
