UM vs FSU: A Rivalry Renewed

"W??ide left!". "Wide right!". Words that make fans of Florida State University cringe every time they hear them. It has been many years since the rivalry of UM vs FSU was relevant, but could this be the year that renews one of the best rivalries in college football history? Jimbo Fisher has consistently kept FSU at the top of the polls and in the mix for the past 5 years, while UM has been anything but consistent. In the off season, a new coach by the name of Mark Richt came to town in hopes of bringing title talks back to the University of Miami. Richt, being a Miami native and UM alumnus himself, has the Miami Hurricanes fan base buzzing and everyone including myself thinking, could the ?U be back?

October 5th, 1951 was the first time these legendary schools clashed, in which Miami came away with a convincing victory of 35 – 13. Since 1951, the schools have played each other 60 times. Miami has the slight advantage between the two, winning 31 times compared to FSU's 29 wins. During this span, both teams have had their own stretches of dominance, and the funny thing is that the largest margin of victory on either side is 47 – 0. The similarities between these two teams don't stop with the amount of success each has had in college football. The University of Miami has had 62 players since 1951 selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, while Florida State has had 43, combining for a total of 105 players drafted. Incredible is the only word I have to describe it. Realizing all the history and greatness between these two teams is reason enough for any college football fan to be excited about this rivalry renewed. The Hurricanes currently are ranked 10th in the country, but many still believe that they are unproven. With the 23rd ranked Florida State Seminoles coming to town, this should be the perfect test to see if Miami is for real. One of the greatest rivalries in sports is back and is coming our way this Saturday night at 8 PM EST, and as a lifelong Hurricanes fan, I can't help but be excited about the new era emerging at the University of Miami. Will there be another wide left or possibly wide right? None of us can be sure, but there is one thing we can all be sure of… it's all about the U.
