If Fox is Fired who should Replace him? These 5 names should be Considered.
On the brink of another failed season, John Fox may has seen his last opportunity in the NFL. The John Fox hire wasn't bad but may have come at the wrong time. At the time of the hire it looked to be smart move due to his history of quick turnarounds which the Bears badly needed. The turnaround however may have to come from another coach as Fox is likely to be a casualty on the infamous "Black Monday." I put together a list of 5 coaches that could finally put the Bears back on the road to glory. Some of these men have a strong history with the Bears and others have a history with well-known coaches who understand the blue print of success.
1. John DeFilippo

DeFilippo comes from the Tom Coughlin coaching tree having worked for the Giants as a Quality Control Coach back in 2005. DeFilippo is on the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel list (See Bottom of Article). DeFilippo is known as a quarterback whisperer and is part of the reason why Carson Wentz is being mentioned as the next elite quarterback. DeFilippo also has worked with current Bears back-up Mark Sanchez and was part of the Jets staff that went to the AFC championship game in 2009. DeFilippo is young at only 39 years old and will bring fresh ideas to an offense that seems to be operating on OOP (out of plays). DeFilippo has been associated with great offensive minds in Lane Kiffin and currently Doug Pederson. DeFilippo could possibly bring in Mike Pettine as a defensive coordinator which is not a major drop off from Vic Fangio. Both men worked on the Jets and Browns staff. He’s my number one candidate due to his offensive background, his familiarity with current backup Mark Sanchez in case Trubisky gets injured and it’s a strong possibility of having a terrific defensive coordinator in Mike Pettine. A DeFilippo hire would make tons of sense.
2.Dave Toub

Toub is a former Bears coordinator having served as the Special Teams Coordinator from 2004-2012. Toub earns instant credibility being on the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel. Toub is from the Andy Reid coaching tree, he served as Reid’s Quality Control Coach in 2001. The Reid coaching tree has provided some quality NFL coaches in John Harbaugh (Baltimore) Sean McDermott (Buffalo) and Doug Pederson (Eagles). Toub has all the potential to stabilize the Bears culture and improve its credibility around the league. What makes Toub an interesting candidate is the fact he’s always been over looked. Toub is 55 but We’ve seen recent success of over looked coaches like Mike Zimmer. Toub’s long tenure in the NFL proves he would bring quality coaches to the Bears staff he’s well known around the league and a hire of Toub would make plenty of sense. Toub looks hungry and ready to prove the NFL world wrong.
3. Steve Wilks
Wilks is currently listed on NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel. Wilks is the Panthers Defensive Coordinator and also serves as Assistant Head Coach. Wilks is a interesting candidate having worked with former Bears Coach Lovie Smith and Carolina coach Ron Rivera. The knock-on Wilks is he’s from a defensive pedigree background. The Bears have been rumored to be looking for an offensive minded coach for the development of Mitchell Trubisky. The philosophical thinking of the Bears shouldn’t be knocked but we’ve seen success from the likes of Mike Tomlin, Mike Zimmer and Sean McDermott. Wilks can possibly be the next coming of Mike Tomlin. Take a look at Wilks press conference, there’s a presence that could be felt through the whole building, in other words he seems like a leader of men from the eye test. The fact Wilks is a top dog on the Panthers coaching staff doesn’t hurt matters either. One strong trait that would wake up Bears fans is Wilks philosophy on turnovers. Remember those great Bears teams who created turnovers week-in and week-out? Yes, Wilks would bring his turnover philosophy back to the Bears. Wilks would also bring a strong pass rush back as its much needed at a time when the NFC North division includes Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. As quoted by veteran Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn in a recent Sports Illustrated article "Wilks is aggressive, man, He’s not believing in sitting back and let you dink and dunk us. We’re going to come after you." Wilks could possibly bring in Norv Turner to run the offense and if you don’t think Turner is still fuming about his Vikings departure, think again. Turner is considered a dinosaur in the coaching ranks but still shouldn't be underestimated.
4. Frank Reich

The winner of all winners, Frank Reich just has a knack for pulling off the unpredictable. Reich is the oldest out of this bunch at 56 but Its well-known during his playing days he was a guy who pulled off the comeback of ages as his Bills team were down 35-3 to the Houston Oilers in the 1992 AFC wild card game. Reich subbed for the injured Jim Kelly and would lead the Bill to a remarkable 41-38 victory. Reich is just as good as a coach and it’s the reason he should be involved in possibly making the Bears relevant which seems like another unpredictable task. Reich hails from the coaching pedigree of Mike McCoy who may even jump on board to be his offensive coordinator if Reich was hired. The beauty of a possible Reich and McCoy combination offers a backup plan in case Reich doesn’t work out. McCoy could easily step in and try to right the ship. The development of Carson Wentz also makes Reich very attractive as Mitchell Trubisky waits in the wings for someone who can bring out the best in his skill set.
5. Wildcard Bill Lazor

Despite only managing one lonely touchdown against the Bears Defense in a 33-7 loss a couple weeks ago, the Bengals Offensive Coordinator is not out of the loop in my eyes. Lazor comes from the coaching pedigree of Joe Gibbs and Mike Holmgren. Lazor also kicked around the Chip Kelly up-tempo offense which generated success. Lazor is due for a opportunity as head coach and should be given consideration. Known through league circles as a quarterback whisperer Lazor managed the maturation of Ryan Tannehill and even was considered responsible for Nick Foles lone Pro Bowl season in 2013. Although the Bengals are struggling this year Andy Dalton did conquer his early season struggles under the guidance of Lazor. Lazor is also a Cornell Graduate and former Quarterback of the Big Red. A Lazor hire rivals similarities to Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. Garrett's head coaching career did not start off fast but Jerry Jones patience proves it was a smart hire.
