"The Stack" 3-28-17

NCAA Womens Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Bridgeport Regional-Connecticut vs Oregon

The UConn Lady Huskies are headed back to the Women's Final Four. They crushed Oregon 90-52. South Carolina's women's team is also headed to the Final Four with a 71-64 win over Florida State.

We don’t have much in “the stack” today. A couple of things though to remind you of. The Stack’s 2017 MLB season preview will be either this Thursday, but probably next Wednesday. Yes I know the season will have started, but there are 162 games so missing two or three isn’t the end of the world. Also soon will be our NHL playoff preview, NBA playoff preview and special NFL mock draft post. You won’t want to miss those. April will be busy. Now then, let’s get right to “the stack” for today, Tuesday, March 28th:

UConn, South Carolina wrap up women’s Final Four

To the shock of absolutely no one, the #1 seed UConn women torched the #10 seed Oregon Ducks 90-52. It was never really a game and I don’t believe UConn ever trailed. Four of the five starters scored in double figures for UConn. They will take on Mississippi State on Friday. Yes you read that correctly. Friday the women’s Final Four starts in Dallas. It is different than in years past.

#1 seed South Carolina built a big lead and then hung on to take down #3 seed Florida State 71-64. Like UConn, South Carolina had four of their five starters in double figures. They will take on #2 seed Stanford. So we have two two seeds and two one seeds headed to Dallas. First game will be South Carolina against Stanford at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN2 and then Mississippi State will take on UConn at 9:30 PM ET on ESPN2. Should be a good Final Four….one that UConn ultimately will win.

Raiders move official

Mark Davis and the Oakland Raiders officially got the approval from the rest of the owners Monday at the NFL’s annual meetings in Arizona to move to Las Vegas. The vote was 31-1 with only Miami’s Stephen Ross being the lone dissenting vote. Davis says the Raiders will play two more seasons in Oakland and maybe three while their new stadium is being built. Davis also said he wants to bring a championship to Oakland. If he wanted to do that so badly he would have kept the team in Oakland, but their stadium is a shit hole, literally. You’ve heard the sewage backing up during Oakland Athletics games in the past. The Black Hole is the Shit Hole and unfortunately for Raider Nation, the local officials including Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf never helped the team come up with a viable stadium option. San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York says he does not see Raiders fans coming across the bay to become 49ers fans. I agree. I hate seeing three teams relocate. It’s not good for the NFL. They are alienating fans. They’ve alienated a lot of them with the celebration penalties players get, the confusion as to what really is a catch, rule changes, length of games and more. The NFL is walking a very dangerous and slippery slope.

In other NFL news, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft says that quarterback Tom Brady could play another six-to-seven years. Highly doubt that, but Kraft is just trying to dum up some interest either in an older Brady or Jimmy Garropolo. He also wants cornerback Malcolm Butler back and would welcome Darrellle Revis to come back to the team.

Injuries on the court and ice

The Cleveland Cavaliers are really stinking up the joint lately with the slump they are in and that continued last night with a 103-74 beatdown by the San Antonio Spurs that was only made worse by LeBron James being forced to leave the game after getting an elbow in the back. The injury should not be serious, but that is beside the point. The Cavaliers are no longer in first place in the eastern conference. This is not good news for this team as the playoffs approach. This team does not look very good at all.

The Carolina Hurricanes are battling for a wild card spot in the NHL’s Eastern Conference and one of their players went down at the end of Monday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Goalie Eddie Lack had to be helped off the ice on a stretcher after he was run over on the game-winning goal in OT. He gave a thumbs up as he left the ice. Definitely a scary scene at the game. Thoughts and prayers are with Lack and the Hurricanes. Hope he ends up just fine.
