Why Uconn Basketball is the Best
Growing up in Canada in the 90s all we really had for NCAA basketball coverage was the NCAA Tournament and random big games on tv on the weekend. The only teams on television it seemed were Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and even Georgetown. Oh how I despised these teams since people I knew were wearing Hoya and Tar Heel starter jackets. I was thinking "you don't even know any players from these schools". A bunch of bandwagon jumpers for teams they thought were "cool". One day in 95 I see a UConn game with Ray Allen playing and I think "man this is my team". I am going to cheer for this team. I couldn't have picked a better school to root for. Ray beats Georgetown on his last second shot in the Big East final then he leaves. But then here comes Richard Hamilton and Khalid el Amin and Ricky Moore and the gang. I remember getting knocked out by Michigan State in the tournament in 97 I believe but felt like this team had something in them. Then comes the 98 tournament and the infamous Richard Hamilton buzzer beater against Washington. But then comes the senior year in 1999 and that run to the championship couldn't have been any sweeter. The 77-74 win against Duke will never be forgotten and Ricky Moore's defense on Trajan Langdon in the final seconds was incredible. But that's not the end of it. Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon in 2004 was fitting. The 10 point comeback against Duke in the semi-finals was awesome! Sure we had the loss against George Mason but once again Denham Brown's tying layup in that game just adds another chapter to the Uconn legend. What can I say about Kemba now??? That 2011 Kemba Walker performance starting from the Big East tournament was so unexpected and fulfilling that words couldn't explain it. Shabazz pulling his Kemba impression in 2014 was even more unexpected!! "They did it again" I say right after the final buzzer. Uconn basketball is the most underrated and least talked about power program in NCAA basketball. 4 titles in 15 years is unmatched these days and the glow I get knowing that this is my team feels better than any sports program that I cheer for. @UconnMBB for life!!
