Penguins Strong 3rd Period Spoils Coreau's Debut
On a night where the Penguins seemed to have struggled against Jared Coreau, they found a way to break through. They rallied from a 3 to 1 deficit in the third-period, to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5 to 3.
In the first period, Henrik Zetterberg scored a goal for the Red Wings. In the second period, Frans Nielsen scored for the Red Wings. Phil Kessel would cut the lead in half later in the period. Dylan Larkin scored also for the Red Wings.
In the third period, Nick Bonino, Justin Schultz, Phil Kessel, and Matt Cullen all scored for the Penguins. When it was 4 to 3 in the third-period, Conor Sheary would have made it 5 to 3, but Detroit challenged and Patric Hornqvist was called for goaltending inference.
So late in the period, Matt Cullen was tripped up in the Detroit zone and he was rewarded a goal because the net was empty and he was going to put the puck in the net. Fleury was solid with 28 saves. Coreau stopped 32 shots. These teams will play each other two more times this season.
