Memo To Bears: Don't Get Too Cute

As we approach the 2017 draft next week in Philadelphia, all eyes will be on the top 3 teams: Cleveland, San Francisco, and Chicago. Cleveland has been rumored to be zeroed in on Myles Garrett, this year’s consensus number 1 draft pick. The 49ers remain a mystery as GM John Lynch was recently quoted to saying the team is opened for business if trades needed to be discussed. The Bears have been their normal “CIA” selves not disclosing any future details on what they may do. Some mock drafts have the Bears linked to Alabama DL Jonathan Allen and Stanford Edge Solomon Thomas. Others have the Bears bolstering their secondary with LSU's Jamal Adams or Ohio States Malik Hooker. The Bears haven’t drafted in the top 3 since 1965, the year the world was introduced to Richard Marvin "Dick" Butkus.
The Bears should not view this year’s draft as rocket science and treat it more like common sense. The top two quarterbacks on Rob Manley’s depth chart are Deshaun Watson and Mitchell Trubisky. Both quarterbacks have face of the franchise value and would represent the Bears organization to the highest regard. Both quarterbacks experienced collegiate level success, leading their respective teams into the national spotlight. Watson and Trubisky appears to be humble and don’t possess the prima donna ego which sucked the life out of Jay Cutler. There is no need for me to delve into stats but both young men appear capable of leading the Bears franchise into the next decade. The Bears are starving for a franchise quarterback and we can’t expect new comer Mike Glennon to turn into Matt Ryan overnight. Glennon is often compared to Matt Ryan but Tampa Bay’s willingness to draft Jameis Winston should tell you Glennon is not near Matt Ryan territory. The irony of this draft is don’t get too cute and trade down. There have been rumors the Bears may trade down to draft a quarterback at a better spot. With their "black hole" reputation at the quarterback position the Bears should not feel guilty taking Watson or Trubisky a little higher than they're rated. If the Bears do decide to trade down, all it takes is one desperate team like Houston to leap frog and to get their guy. I just don't see Houston leap frogging all the way up to #2, therefore the Bears should stand pat at 3 and get their leader of the future. Deshaun Watson or Mitchell Trubisky, it’s not rocket science, its common sense.
