U-20 USNWT Draw Against Ghana
Very early on Monday morning, the Under-20 United States Women's Team finished off group play with a match-up against Ghana, and things didn't go exactly as planned.
Both sides started the game moving the ball rather well, and Ghana took advantage of that early. In the 20th minute, Ernestina Abambila had gotten possession of the ball and charged up the middle of the penalty box. She volleyed a shot towards the net, and it hit the right corner area of crossbar. Unfortunately, U.S. goalkeeper Casey Murphy misjudged the ball, and it ended up bouncing off her back. The ball then rolled passed the posts for an own goal.
The U.S. women didn't let that goal deter them, however, as two minutes later, they would equalize. Mallory Pugh got a nice pass from the midfield, and shot the ball from just beyond the box. It wasn't a laser shot, but it did the job, rolling passed the lower left corner of the goal. Once the game was drawn, it seemed as if the U.S. was a little content to defend and get the game over with. Ghana even brought in younger players over experienced ones. Regardless, the U.S. did what was necessary to move on to the quarterfinals. Below are those quarterfinal match-ups.
